March 2005: The College of Medicine participates for the first time in
national Match Day, when medical students nationwide find out where they
will complete residency training. All Class of 2005 students match with residency
programs, about half in Florida.
March 2005: The College of Medicine opens its fourth regional campus, in
Sarasota.
May 2005: The Class of 2005 has its graduation ceremony in the courtyard,
with D’Alemberte as commencement speaker.
June 2005: The 80 students of the fifth class, the Class of 2009, arrive. It’s the
most diverse class to date: 62.5 percent female and 51 percent minorities, with
20 percent underrepresented minorities.
July 2005: A rural program is added in Marianna. Students may spend their
third year doing rotations with area physicians, both in private practice and at
Jackson Hospital.
January 2006: NCH Healthcare System agrees to help the College of
Medicine establish a training program focusing on rural health in Immokalee,
home to many poor farm and migrant workers.
June 2006: The 100 students in the sixth class, the Class of 2010, arrive.
June 2006: The Tallahassee Regional Campus expands to Thomasville,
Georgia, with support from the Williams Family Foundation of Georgia Inc.
and John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital.
May 2007: NHC transfers to FSU the deed on the Isabel Collier Read
Building and accompanying 9.4 acres in Immokalee. Mrs. Read later donates
$1 million to the College of Medicine to endow the education program at
what becomes the Isabel Collier Read Medical Campus.
May 2007: The first full class of 120 students, the Class of 2011, arrives.
Ultimately, full enrollment for all four classes will be 480.
June 2007: Third-year students arrive at new regional campuses in Daytona
Beach and Fort Pierce. The number of clinical faculty throughout the state
exceeds 800. (By 2020, the number will exceed 3,400.)
September 2007: The College of Medicine ranks among the top 10 medical
schools in the country for Hispanics, according to Hispanic Business
magazine.
