ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
In addition to the many people mentioned in this book who helped bring the
College of Medicine into existence, Gov. Jeb Bush played a key role. He saw
the needs of Florida’s people. He recognized that this medical school – as outlined
by Rep. Durell Peaden in his bill – could meet those needs. He particularly
saw the needs of older, inner-city, rural and other medically underserved people.
For their sake, he enacted that bill into law and put the necessary resources
behind it. Gov. Bush, we believe that our medical school has justified your faith
in us. Look at the nearly 1,500 doctors that we have produced so far. Many of
them are practicing in areas of great need. Thank you again for your trust and
confidence.
Also key to our success were the original students who came to this not-yet-accredited
medical school – at a time when coming here involved a leap of faith.
