Unless you have experienced it, it’s nearly impossible to describe. We helped create a legacy, a medical school that will impact and serve thousands of people for generations. This medical school was the foundation of my career and of my personal life. During orientation, I met my future husband, Dr. Matthew Lee. I remember it like it was yesterday. Our experience at the College of Medicine taught us that with courage, perseverance and grit, we can accomplish anything. Being part of the school’s creation made us tough from the beginning. We had to work hard in the face of uncertainty. We were unsure if the school would become accredited. We were unsure if we were going to survive as a couple. Eighteen years ago, we were afraid but, as John Wayne recommended, we saddled up anyway. Now we can look back and be proud of our hard work. Matt and I have been together for 18 years. We have four wonderful children and are both owners in our medical practices. Carbon under high pressure and temperature creates diamonds. Before the College of Medicine, we were lumps of carbon. We were young pliable adults who were eager to learn and grow. FSU provided an environment for us to transform and grow into medical experts, clinicians, surgeons, husbands, wives and parents. We are forever grateful for the experience. • Breaking the Mold | 75
