Marzluff, who was a professor of biochemistry teaching PIMS students. Bill had
a number of genetic and molecular projects in his lab that I would fit into beautifully.
We wrote a grant proposal with him, and we got that award from the NSF.
And that’s how I started at Florida State – with an NSF award to work with Bill
on the grant proposal and as an adjunct professor in chemistry.
Later, Bob hired me to be an assistant director in PIMS and help with admissions
and advising. That’s where I learned about our mission for medical students.
I didn’t know it then, but I was on a road that would take me straight to
the door of the Florida State University College of Medicine – which, of course,
didn’t exist yet. •
