• The faculty scholars who helped build this school, especially Thesla Berne-
Anderson, Jim Cavanagh, Mollie Hill, Alma Littles, Helen Livingston, Elena
Reyes (who, incidentally, played a key role in introducing me to philanthropist
Charlotte Maguire, thereby changing College of Medicine history),
Barbara Shearer (who with help from people across the state created one of
the first digital libraries, providing access to students and faculty wherever
they were), Dave Steele (who helped us build the Year 1 and 2 curriculum)
and Frank Walker (who helped build our holistic admissions process, which
runs so beautifully today).
• Randy Rill, for his part in establishing the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program
and the Bridge to Clinical Medicine M.S. program.
• The early College of Medicine staff members and friends, especially Jan
Beane, John Beidler, Cathy Bell, Margaret Lynn Dugger, TaWanda Durant
(my go-to assistant for more than 10 years), April Green, Renee Green,
Renata McCann, Toni McCoy, Melinda McDaniel, Pat Meredith, Charlene
Rucker and Becky Shepherd.
• Doug Carlson and his alumni affairs office, for tirelessly tracking down our
graduates so we can measure our outcomes. He recognized that it would be
vitally important to know, for example, how many of our alumni are practicing
in Florida. I don’t know of any other medical school that provides such
detailed alumni information.
• PIMS staff members Bonnie Wright, Dee Sellers and others too numerous
to mention.
• Pathology Associates, for helping to teach the pathology curriculum – in
some cases, after retirement.
• All the donors who gave generously in the College of Medicine’s early years –
and current donors. These students are a sound investment.
• My colleagues across campus who were there for me all the way.
• Frank Skilling, who sent me flowers during one of our darkest days.
• Everyone who assisted with the production of this book, including Florida
State President John Thrasher, Provost Sally McRorie, Dean John P. Fogarty,
my friend and advocate physicist Mark Riley, designer Mark Bauer, editor
Ron Hartung, photographer Colin Hackley, FSU Photo Services and the
other photographers whose photos appear in this book.
• And Larry Abele, longtime provost of Florida State. He hired me to be the
last director of the Program in Medical Sciences, placing me in a position to
make the contribution of a lifetime. Imagine, this little girl from Arkansas
getting an opportunity to make such an impact on so many lives. Thank you,
Larry.
