Project: Restoring the Citadel

In 2003–04, DCC’s expertise helped to restore the
national historic resource that is the Citadel in Quebec
City. The $20 million restoration project involved
dismantling stone walls, excavating part of the walls and
installing a drainage system, and then rebuilding the
walls and returning everything to its original condition.
DCC provided support for consultation, procurement
and project management for this project, which came
with some interesting challenges. While restoring the
walls, workers found a cistern, old fortification walls
and old building walls—each time a new discovery
was made, work stopped while experts examined and
preserved the items.
Added to the project’s complexity, original material
proved difficult to find. The Citadel’s sandstone “siding”
stones, for example, came from a nearby quarry in 1820,
but that quarry had been permanently closed. DCC found
