Key Events of the period
Summer 1952—The federal government announces the
establishment of a permanent base and training area in New
Brunswick: CFB Gagetown is born.
January 1953—The United States presents Canada with an
urgent request for an experimental program that would ultimately
become the DEW Line in the Canadian Arctic.
October 8, 1953—The Canada-U.S. Military Study Group
recommends an early warning line located along the 55th parallel
between Alaska and Newfoundland: the Mid-Canada Line.
April 8, 1954—Cabinet approves the termination of the
DCL management agreement with CMHC.
