A still-growing, top 10 port

Gaining recognition as one of the Gulf Coast’ s premier breakbulk destinations, Louisiana’ s Port of Lake Charles’ strategic location, expansive infrastructure and tailored services meet the unique needs of this complex shipping category.
The Port of Lake Charles is a top 10 US deepwater port for cargo tonnage— just ahead of the Port of Los Angeles, according to US Commerce Department statistics. Breakbulk cargo is a key part of that mix.
With specialized handling capabilities, new shiploading capabilities and hardened infrastructure along with direct access to the Calcasieu Ship Channel, the port can accommodate large vessels and a wide range of cargoes.
Additionally, its berths and laydown areas can handle oversized and heavy-lift items that container ports often struggle with.
“ The Port of Lake Charles stands out because of its ability to move big, bulky items quickly and safely,” said Richert Self, executive director of the Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District.“ We’ ve invested heavily in infrastructure and equipment that caters specifically to breakbulk operations.”
The port’ s strategic position along the Calcasieu Ship
Channel, just 34 miles from the Gulf, offers direct access to global trade routes. In addition, strong road and rail connections make inland distribution efficient, benefiting industries across the southern US and beyond.
Another advantage is the port’ s flexibility. It offers customized handling solutions and is increasing its warehouse and outdoor storage space, which is critical for staging project cargo and facilitating in-time delivery schedules.
Recent projects, including large-scale energy infrastructure and industrial manufacturing equipment imports, have demonstrated the port’ s capabilities. Its efficiency in handling cargo has earned praise from logistics providers and shippers alike.
As global supply chains increasingly seek alternatives to congested container ports, the Port of Lake Charles presents a compelling option for breakbulk shippers. With plans for further expansion and modernization, the port is poised to solidify its position as a leading Gulf Coast breakbulk gateway.
“ This is more than just a port. It’ s a partner for industry,” Self said.“ We’ re ready to meet the future of cargo head-on.”
