The Start
Of It
All...
In the summer of 2010, I truly became sick and tired of being broke ALL the time. My guess is can you relate... This state of being has been referred to as the “Rat Race,” merely working hard each day yet getting nowhere financially. In spite of that, I was encountering people who lived a life free from financial burdens. If they wanted to go on vacation, the only issue was getting time off from work. When their loved ones needed special medical attention, a home nurse was obtained easily without the help of insurance. When their car transmission failed, the concern was whether to fix the car or buy a new one with cash. Can you imagine a life in which money is not the main factor of your decisions?
So, fresh out of graduate school (with a nice student loan eagerly awaiting me), I became tenacious about learning how an average person could build a life of financial freedom. I am not a millionaire, I have no degrees in finance, nor do I have a grand inheritance on the way. What I am is debt-free three years into my journey towards financial freedom. Years which included unemployment, minimum wage jobs, periods of housing displacement, unexpected medical expenses, and debt collections. My desire with this column is to share the information and knowledge I, with the help of others, have gathered along my journey.
As a follower of Christ, I have seen God use His children through their knowledge of finances. A few of my role models are David Green, the owner of Hobby Lobby, and Michelle Singletary, an award winning columnist and financial expert for the Washington Post. Green is the largest evangelical benefactor in the world and has done great things with his fortune, including contributing billions to Liberty University’s campus expansion and funding the You Version applications.
