B! 8 Music Interview | Dreamstate EP by Ruben Young AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST, I’VE BEEN DEDICATED TO BUILDING A BRASH! How did the EP, Dreamstate, take its form throughout your travels across North FOUNDATION FOR MY CAREER. America? RY: I remember in the beginning stages of Dreamstate, my manager Click and I would go for BBQ, talk life, then sit in his car and play music that we loved for eachother. We connected over how much we both loved both classic and future soul music, and I remember him asking me what kind of music I wanted to make and thats when I realized that I had yet to find my sound. Click and I made a playlist of music that we felt spoke to the artist I aspired to be and from session to session, I slowly started creating work that felt closer to that playlist - while putting my own flavor to it.  BRASH! What motivated you to choose to allow music lovers into “your world” with this EP? RY: Some of my favorite moments as an artist have been through fans contacting me to tell me that they’ve connected with and relate to my music. I dream of my music becoming the soundtrack to people’s lives - for it to be their nostalgia in the same way that artists like Kanye West have been for me. Dreamstate is music for hopeless romantics to get into their feelings and bounce to. BRASH! In releasing your music through your label, Young And Lucky, what was the biggest challenge you've faced? RY: Its no secret - there are huge advantages to having support from a record label. Playlists, resources, touring, support - all of it. As an independent artist, I’ve been dedicated to building a foundation for my career. My team and I work for every fan, and for every listen and to keep it 100, it is really hard work. You can finish a 20 hour day of work, and not be sure of what you really accomplished. But those days add up, and it’s been amazing to watch and feel my project, brand and music grow over this year. I really believe that we’re onto something special with Young & Lucky. Photo Credit: Eric Richards BRASH! What's next for you in the upcoming year? RY: I guess there is no real ‘next’. Every day I live in the pursuit of next. I’m going to continue to share Dreamstate with the world every single day, and soon I will put my creative hat back on and get back in the studio.
