Travelogue - Devi Garh Palace
An Exotic Mix
of the Traditional and
THE MODERN!
Devi Garh Palace, Rajasthan
BY ARPAN JENNIFER VIMAL
A
heritage hotel and resort, housed in the 18th-century in the
village of Delwara. Devi Garh Palace, the former residence of
the rulers of Delwara principality has been amazingly restored
into a luxurious, sophisticated and impossibly romantic retreat.
Nestled in the Aravali hills, 28 kilometers away from the bustle
of Udaipur, this all suite luxury resort assumes the look of new India with an
emphasis on design and detail. The interior of the 18th century fort palace
has been transformed in a minimalist contemporary manner while conserving the ancient exterior. The fort also forms one of the three main passes
into the valley of Udaipur.
One of the most outstanding features of Devi Garh Palace is its landscape
design done in a modern and contemporary manner. Using traditional materials and motifs, contemporary designs have been created which embody
the confluence between the old and the new. The raw materials used are
all local, with white marble utilized extensively throughout the palace. The
two 12 feet high standing blocks of uncut white marble at the entrance are
symbolic representations of the stone in its purest form.
The restaurant features innovative Asian and continental cuisine.
A special effort has been made to ensure that the food served
has an authentic home cooked flavor with an emphasis on fresh
ingredients. The Devi Garh Bar, offers a varied mix of cocktails and
music, board games inlayed onto tabletops and candle lit charm.
Services offered are 24 hours room service, private dining,
satellite television, concierge service, currency exchange, laundry
and dry cleaning, Internet access and E-mail, baby sitter, Library and
physician on call.
The hotel is a convenient few minutes’ scenic drive from the city.
The fort is surrounded by lush green fields and mountains on three
sides. The combination of a traditional Rajasthani village and the towering fort makes for an exotic blend.
