As I write this, we’ re teetering on the edge of finally getting on top of things. My knee operation has been rescheduled to 3rd September- just a week later than planned, but far better timing for me.

In the next two weeks, my son will have received his GCSE results, started college, completed his Silver Duke of Edinburgh, and- fingers crossed- begun his first job as a lifeguard at the leisure centre. Yes, it’ s all his doing, but somehow my life has been swept up in the whirlwind too.

But, come 3rd September, that’ s it. No more cooking, cleaning, or taxi-ing. The men of the house are officially on duty- and I, for one, cannot wait.

Now the real question is: do I need a bell or a whistle to summon them?

I am pleased that the nights are getting cooler though, given that I am going to be laid up for weeks. For me, the true sign that autumn has arrived is the Annual Box Moor Trust Autumn Festival- this year taking place on the 20th and 21st of September. Before that, however, we have the Heritage Open Days, running from the 12th to the 21st of September. The Hemel Hempstead Local History & Museum Society is hosting an impressive 17 events across 9 historic local sites. It’ s a brilliant way to connect with the past, discover something new right on your doorstep and it’ s free. Read more on page 8.
