However, if you’ re reading it after that date, you will either have seen – or, sadly, missed- this unique production at the Boxmoor Playhouse on St John’ s Road.
It’ s hard to believe that the society first began in 1925 under its original name: Hemel Hempstead Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, now, thankfully, simplified into Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company. amazing number of Centenary performers are now well into this year’ s panto, Babes in the Wood, to be on-stage during the first two weeks of December. In fact, Ciaran Connors, director of Centenary Celebration, is playing the Dame, Nurse Molly Coddle! But more about that next month ….
Unfortunately, much of our history is missing but we still have programmes that record shows produced over many, many years at the Playhouse – the first being in 1932, the year that our home, formerly St John’ s Hall, was officially opened.
Centenary Celebration pays tribute to many of our past productions with excerpts ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan’ s Pirates of Penzance to Avenue Q, on the musical side, and from Shakespeare’ s Much Ado About Nothing to Noel Coward’ s Blythe Spirit on the drama front.
