August is the month when people go on holiday( if they’ re lucky) or, at any rate, try to relax a bit.
Most societies close down until September, unless they have some special holiday course to offer.
That’ s exactly what’ s happening at the Boxmoor Playhouse – and more besides. Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company has certainly not closed down!
There’ s a team busy working on the set for the society’ s special week-long children’ s drama course, which starts on August 11 and ends with a public performance of Frozen at 2.30 pm on Saturday, August 16th. Zoe Mackie is in charge and I know that she has already got the schedule fully worked out.
In addition, a lot of members are already working very hard on our next TWO productions. for the first time. As panto addicts will know, traditionally this one generally incorporates Robin Hood, so you can expect a lot of green hats and( dare I say?) bows and arrows! We’ ve got a strong cast, including two children’ s choruses, each of which will be on-stage for one week and enthusiasm is running high. Dan Shirley is the director with Katie Lovell as producer.
So, as you will have gathered, August is NOT a time to relax down at the Playhouse. But it is very exciting and promises to be a lot of fun both on and off stage and front of house – which means you! If you’ ve never seen one of our shows, come along and see if you like us; and if you’ re a regular – well, you know what to do.
The Centenary Celebration, which marks our active presence in Hemel Hempstead for a staggering 100 years( except during World War 2) will be presented on October 10 and 11 at the Playhouse, so you’ d be wise to get your tickets as soon as possible, given that we sold 95 % of tickets for Sister Act, and had people queuing up for returns.
It’ s going to be a compilation of songs, dancing and extracts from plays we have done over the years. Blythe Spirit, The Winter’ s Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, The Vicar of Dibley,‘ Allo‘ Allo, Dads’ Army and Pride and Prejudice are featured, with musical numbers ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan to Avenue Q, plus some snappy choreography. Ciaran Connors is in charge, with one eye on artistic creativity and the other on a stop watch, to make sure we don’ t over-run a sensible time frame.
And, as if that’ s not enough, we’ ve been busy auditioning this year’ s pantomime – which is not scheduled until the first two weekends in December!
This year we shall be presenting Babes in the Wood
