Hughie Lewis Fury has followed in the footsteps of his cousin, Tyson Fury, who turned pro in 2008. Five years on, Hughie has signed a professional contract with Tyson's promoter,
Hennessy Sports.
The heavyweight prospect is 19 years of age and currently stands at 6'6" tall and weighs 17 stones. Hughie makes his official pro debut on Friday, 22 March, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He will also make his debut on American soil in New York on April 20, when he fights on the undercard of Tyson's headline bout with Steve Cunningham.
Boxing is in the blood of the Fury's and has been for over 100 years. The Fury family name derives from Galway which is in the West Region of the Republic of Ireland. Hughie is the latest member of the Fury clan to pursue a professional boxing career.
Tyson Fury, is of course Hughie's cousin and he is a well recognized figure on the heavyweight scene. He is a former British and Commonwealth titlist. Hughie has another cousin in the pro ranks. Phill Fury has had 16 bouts since turning pro and will fight again on March 23 in Kent. Hughie's Father and trainer, Peter, had a short amateur and pro career himself.
Many of Hughie's uncles, great uncles and great great uncles have also boxed over the years gone by.
Hughie Lewis Fury was born in Stockport, Manchester. He has trained and sparred with his cousin Tyson since an early age. Hughie fought over 50 times in total as an amateur and won various titles. He won the North-West schoolboy championships 3 times and reached the CYP championships semi-final's in 2010. He then went on to win the CYP's a year later in 2011.
In 2012, Hughie was awarded the Tri Nations Silver medal and went on to win the ABA championships. He then claimed the most prestigious medal of his amateur career, winning Gold for England at the AIBA World Youth championships in Armenia. Hughie represented England, but he is of course very proud of his Irish roots. He will be wearing the Irish colours on his robe when he makes his entrances to the ring.
Hughie mainly trains on the road in camps now. He is currently based in Ottawa, Canada, for the next 5 weeks in the build up to his official pro debut in Montreal and for his American debut in New York.
