Boxing Mad Magazine #10 MAYDAY FOR MAIDANA | Page 4

DREAM COME TRUE “What can I say. Well, getting in there I was more nervous than I’d been in all my fights” Robinson described his anxiety before the biggest fight of his career thus far. “The first few rounds I felt he was quite tricky, the guy was hard to pin down, his movement was brilliant, he had a good boxing brain on him, he was a very good counter-puncher.” Some of those worries came from a late change in opponent, as Jason Ball had pulled out of the contest, leaving Allon to jump in at very short notice, having not fought professionally for over 4 years – mostly linked to legal troubles outside of the ring. Redditch’s Andrew Robinson speaks to Boxing Mad Magazine’s Peter Wells about being on cloud nine, after winning his fIrst pro belt in Birmingham Merely finding a road to follow was tough enough for Andrew Robinson. That is why winning a title that barely receives any recognition in the boxing world comes as such a huge achievement for the 29 year old former DJ. Speaking to Boxing Mad Magazine last year, Andrew revealed the troubles he met growing up on the wrong side of the law. Robinson told us he “should have been dead already” having been at gun point several times. But now the admirably humble Robinson lives with his fiancée and two children and gives praise to God for his change in direction. On Saturday 22nd March his dreams came true when he claimed the vacant British Masters Bronze Super Middleweight title, improving to 10-0(3) in the process. Luke Allon 4-2(1) – only other defeat was to Patrick Mendy – was brave but overpowered in 5 rounds as Robinson was let loose in front of his adoring family, friends and fans. 4 BOXINGMADMAGAZINE.COM ““It was a worry to be fair cause on paper this guy is better than Jason Ball, and I’d planned to give Jason Ball a boxing lesson. From my perspective I don’t think he’s (Ball) the best of boxers but I know he’s a really good fighter, so my plan was not to get involved. So when I knew I was fighting another prospect, I thought I’m not gonna be able to box this guy, to my knowledge this guy was as good a boxer as me. And he only had one loss, to Patrick Mendy.” Robinson soon settled into a rhythm as he looked to put his inactive foe under pressure, “by the end of round 2 I knew I had to throw in bunches, I knew that would slowly break him down.” But maybe getting over eager, Robinson paid the price late in round 4 for lunging in, touching down for the first time in his career, “I jumped in, I felt like I lost my footing and cause he’s a good counter-puncher he caught me off balance. I didn’t actually go down my glove just touched the floor and I was given a standing eight.” In the 5th, Robinson responded in style, driven on by the embarrassment of the earlier knockdown, “it pissed me off to be fair! I sat down and thought ‘bloody hell I need to get on this guy now cause he’s gaining confidence’. Coming into the fight I felt so good, I thought it’s time to give everything now. And that’s what I did” Indeed that is exactly what Andrew did as he twice floored Allon in the 5th, forcing the referee to intervene with 48 seconds left in the round. After exhaling with relief, the emotions soon kicked in for Robinson, “I was really emotional, I cried. It was lovely to have everyone there, everyone I loved, it was a dream come true. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it, it’s every boxers dream.” Days after the fight Robinson was still evidently emotional after an incredible transformation, the realisation of just what he has achieved was still taking its toll, “I just felt I’d achieved everything that I need to, that was like winning a world title for me. It still hasn’t sunk in now to be fair. Waking up and sleeping with the belt! I’m at a loss for words.” An incredible story has already been written in the stars by Andrew Robinson, but his jubilant supporters feel they have only just seen the beginning of an exciting boxing journey. With not one ounce of pressure on his shoulders, Robinson is enjoying every minute of his boxing story, as he carries on living the dream. BOXINGMADMAGAZINE.COM 5
