Natural Beauty.
freelance researcher, with assistance from the
AONB Unit, volunteers, and literally hundreds
of local people who contributed stories,
photographs, and personal records.
We aimed to document changes and
experiences in everyday life in the years
since the designation of this special area in
1964, in order to create a lasting record
of an outstanding landscape and its vibrant
communities.
In order to make the Scrapbook, we chose
four themes to reflect life in the AONB –
villages, farming, major events and visitors –
and carried out research at libraries, archives
and through the local newspapers. We met
with a wide range of groups and individuals
and attended many summer agricultural
shows to share our findings and to inspire
further reminiscences. The conversations will
continue, and we are archiving records on line:
keep up to date through our Facebook page
‘bowlandscrapbook’.
The Scrapbook was produced by Champion
Bowland on behalf of the AONB Partnership
and with support from the Heritage Lottery
Fund. The project ran from May to October
2014 and was co-ordinated by Sue Holden, a
