It seeks to help survivors heal with guidance and support. The Laurens Kids Foundation has created a curriculum called “Safer, Smarter Kids” which has been implemented into the Miami Dade and Broward public schools sexual abuse education program. The “Safer, Smarter Kids” program is an abuse prevention curriculum designed for early childhood students. After years of implementation in the Miami Dade school system, the 2011 Florida Legislature directed the Lauren’s Kids Foundation to develop and expand the curriculum for every public early childhood classroom and guidance office in the state of Florida. The curriculum is divided into six, 30-minute micro lessons designed to fit easily into any classroom schedule. Each lesson contains a video module, in-class exercises, and take-home ancillary materials to involve parents in this important program. Moreover, the curriculum satisfies more than 22 ESOL and Sunshine State Standards in the state of Florida.
Additionally, Lauren Book holds an annual charity event called “Walk in My Shoes” designed to bring survivors and advocates together across Florida to shed awareness on the problem of child sexual abuse through the promotion of continuous legislation. Lauren has walked 500 miles across Florida in her fundraising and awareness efforts. Her initial walk was from Miami to the State Capitol in Tallahassee. After completing her first walk, Lauren continues to climb insurmountable heights by walking further every year. The Laurens Kids Foundation has also developed an informational campaign called “Don’t Miss the Signs”, to educate adults about the signs of abuse. The foundation has also been successful in amending Florida law by making it a third degree felony in the state of Florida if an adult knowingly fails to report signs of child abuse. Also, Lauren and her father have mounted a legislative onslaught against child sexual abuse predators by allowing the victims to gain 48-hour access to a predator’s HIV test results.
