Opening of Johnny’s Place
On what would have been Johnny’s 90th
birthday the gates were officially opened to a
wonderful tribute to an outstanding local
gentleman, well known and loved by all who
had the pleasure of meeting him and his
horses.
Johnny Murray and his horse Minnie were
iconic figures as they walked the streets of
Mitchell, chatting and entertaining all and
sundry with Minnie’s tricks and John’s
immense local knowledge. Following his
untimely death late in 2018 the community
decided there should be a lasting memorial to
this special man and true Mitchell Legend.
Booringa Action Group through donations
from the community and John’s family brought
the idea to life and on August 13, 2019
Johnny’s Place was officially opened. It is a
place to sit, ponder, chat, be a part of the
community and remember John.
Netball - Maggies fly East
Mitchell Magpies Netball players attended
Chinchilla’s first inter-district netball
carnival.Nine girls travelled to Chinchilla to
play in the under 12’s division, challenging
themselves and to play against some more
experienced netballers.

The indoor courts led to some excitement
for these young girls, only ever training on
dry grass courts the girls accepted the
challenge and adapted with ease as they
moved around the court.
“The passion these girls have for the sport is
evident as you watch them pass the ball
quickly and confidently down the court, the
commitment the girls have towards their team
and the effort they put in right to the end is to
be commended,” said Mitchell coach
Maryanne Russell.
St Patrick’s School
St Patrick’s School welcomed Aunty Lynette,
Saraeva and Chong Martin to perform a
smoking ceremony on their new building.
The ceremony started with an
acknowledgment to country by Miss Sonya
followed by the school prayer in Gunggari and
the smoking ceremony by Aunty Lynette.
“It was such a beautiful way to open the new
building and teach the students about the
importance of a smoking ceremony, which
they have been learning about with Miss
Sonya during their Gunggari lesson. We are
so privileged to have such strong connections
with our local elders and
3.
Gunggari people who are
willing to come and teach the
students about their culture
and history.” Principal Zoe

“Aunty Irene would be very proud to see
everyone gathered under the new building
and sharing in such a special tradition,” she
said.
