Booringa Fire & Water
Festival
On September 14, the Mitchell Magpies
wrapped up a successful season on and off
the field, with their annual Football Banquet at
the Mitchell Shire Hall. Highlights of 2019
were Reserve Grade making the Grand Final
& Daniel Bruce getting the Roma & District
Reserve Grade Player of the Year. The Club
also took the opportunity to thank all
Committee members, volunteers, sponsors
and supporters without whom the season
wouldn't have been as successful.
At just 20 years old, Matthew Newton was
awarded A Grade Best and Fairest and the
Daniel Dodd Memorial Players Player trophy.
These awards are a big achievement for such
a young player and speak to Matty’s
consistency, talent and leadership. Isaac Page
also capped off a great season taking home
four awards - U18 Best and Fairest and Best
Team Man plus U16 Best and Fairest and U16
Player of the Finals. Daniel Bruce won
Reserve Grade Player of the year and
Reserve Grade Player of the Finals. Jodie
Mackay’s ongoing contribution was
acknowledged with her being awarded Club
Person of the Year, whilst, Ken Fien’s
enthusiasm for the Club was recognised with
the Peg Hughes Memorial Supporter of the
Year shield.

The Booringa Fire and Water Festival made a
highly successful, long-awaited return on
September 20-21. Festivities kicked off at St
Patrick’s school on the Friday night with
around 120 people enjoying a delicious camp
oven meal, ‘Walk Through Time’ presentation,
live music and student performances.
Then came the main event on Saturday, which
attracted over 400 people to the Mitchell
Showgrounds. The organising committee’s
exhaustive efforts came to fruition and festival
goers where delighted by the live music,
dance, aerial silk, choir and fire twirling
performances, art displays and workshops,
great selection of food and drinks and face
painting. The markets featuring 20 different
stall holders were also a big hit. The festival
highlighted Mitchell’s past, present and future,
the connection with the town’s indigenous
history and the thriving local creative scene.
The event was made possible by the
sponsorship of Booringa Action Group,
Maranoa Regional Council, Western
Queensland Primary Health Network, Beyond
Blue, Rotary Club of Ipswich City, Rotary
Drought Relief 9630, Food works Mitchell and
Coates Hire.
Bree Jiggins, Cara Cicero and a small but
dedicated band of volunteers were also
instrumental in the successful resurrection and
organisation of the Booringa Fire and Water
Festival and their contribution is greatly
appreciated by the local community.
