Deputy Mayor Jan Chambers conducted this year’s ceremony, with Aunty Lynette Nixon opening proceedings with the Welcome to Country. “I would like to congratulate everyone who was nominated for an Australia Day Award,” said Cr Chambers. “Our community is blessed with a large number of hard working people who are committed to the goals and ideals of our country. “These awards focus attention on Australian characteristics and values we respect; a fair go, a respect for diversity, a genuine concern for our people and a love of sport,” said Cr Chambers. Citizen of the Year – Aunty Lynette Nixon Young Citizen of the Year – Cara Cicero Sports Award – Carlie Payne Junior Sports Award – Sophie Filan Community Event of the Year – Mitchell Magpies 100 Year Reunion Member Contribution Award – Bridget Lamb Achievement Award – Jennifer Crocker As the ceremony ended inside, guests flowed back onto the deck for the cutting of the Australia Day cake by Cr Chambers and Aunty Lynette. Guests where once again entertained by Maggie’s lovely voice and relaxed setting. Then as the morning warmed up the family fun and games began in the Mitchell Pool. Maranoa 6. Regional Council did an excellent job of keeping everyone entertained and cool for the rest of the day. Mitchell State School kicked of 2019 with eleven new prep students and a newly appointed Principal, Cass Ahearn. “I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition of community!” said Principal Ahearn. “I have worked with a variety of schools around the south west, most recently working as Principal at Morven State School in a teaching principal role. “I am excited and eager to bring my skills as an educational leader to Mitchell State School and work with families and the community to ensure the success of our school and community,” said the Principal. St Patrick’s School is very excited to welcome Miss Rebecca Smith (Year 4-6 teacher) and new prep student Lexi Whittaker to the school community. “Its lovely to see the excitement and 1. enthusiasm all our students have for school and I’m sure there were a lot of parents happy to see school start back,” said Principal Zoe. “A positive attitude to schooling really has a huge impact on student achievement and its an important responsibility of teachers and parents to cultivate this positive attitude.” Said Principal Zoe. On February 7, the Opening School Mass and Leadership Induction ceremony was held with Father Jamie at the Columba’s Church. The new school Captains for 2019 are Leela Junior Sport Sign Corbett and Jaxson Wyman. Patricians House Captain – Ryan Kingsley, Columbans Ons House Captain – Samantha Norrman. Year six School Leaders are Jarad Cross, Aaron Cross Mitchell & District Junior Rugby League and Netball and Izaak Halpin. Congratulations! Club had their sign on day on Wednesday February 13, Australia Day Winners another great turnout for Mitchell’s Spa Complex was the place to 2019. If you missed this date, celebrate Australia Day for 2019. Sitting on don’t worry it’s not too late the deck with blue skies, crystal-clear pools, 3. mouth-watering breakfast and the beautiful you can still sign on. The club also had its AGM on November 29, 2018 and the following Office Bearers were elected fro 2019: President - John Birkett; V President - Kev Corbett; Secretary - Amanda Bowen; Treasurer - Angela Crump; Canteen - Michelle McInnerney and Netball - Marianne Russell.
