Answers to your questions about Botox
Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Marialyn Sardo, offers her experience and expertise to answer
these frequently asked questions about BOTOX
Q: How does BOTOX® work?
A: BOTOX® is a type A strain of botulinum toxins, and it blocks a
muscle’s ability to contract to smooth out existing lines and
preventing new ones from forming. BOTOX® is injected into
specifically targeted areas of the facial muscles to improve the
appearance of moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles.
Q: How long does BOTOX® last?
A: BOTOX® will generally last between three to four months. In
order to maintain results, patients must undergo repeat injections
every three to four months. Since BOTOX® injections are
performed in under an thirty minutes, are well tolerated, and require
no downtime or recovery, having repeat injections every few months
is not a problem for most people.
Q: Will BOTOX® hurt?
A: For most, any pain or discomfort caused by BOTOX® is minimal
and brief. The entire procedure takes less than thirty minutes, and
day normally with only minor limitations. After injections, there may
be slight localized pain at the sight of the injection with mild
tenderness; however, this should subside within the first 24 hours.
Q: Will I still be able to make facial expressions?
A: BOTOX® will not change your facial expression dramatically or
make you appear as if you underwent a cosmetic procedure.
BOTOX® does temporarily reduce your ability to engage the muscle
activity responsible for frown lines, but you will still be able to frown,
look surprised, and have facial expression. This will all gradually
reduce with time as the body absorbs the chemical.
Q: How long does it take to notice results?
A: The results from BOTOX® will appear within a few days to a week
after receiving the injections. Within a month, you will notice the
most amount of improvement, as the reduced muscle activity will help
improve and smooth out frown lines. These results will typically last
up to six months, but each case will vary.
