Eka Karya Botanical Garden
Bali is renowned for its beauty in both cultural heritage as well as natural beauty. One such example is the Eka Karya Botanical Garden located in Bali. A botanical garden is basically a garden with many different species of the plants for people to see and learn about. A botanical garden differs from a regular garden by the amount of imported plant life as well as the cost for the garden (the botanical garden being more expensive to make and maintain). This particular garden has numerous collections of plants, having 8880 species in the garden, including rare species like the green rose and the black orchid. Besides being one of the largest botanical gardens in Indonesia, Eka Karya is also one of the youngest, built on July 15, 1959, being one of the few made after Indonesia got its independence, instead of being built by the Dutch. The botanical garden is run by an organisation called Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), or the Indonesian Science Centre and was first build by Prof. Dr. Ir. Koeswoto Setyoan Wiryo. It is now currently owned by the government and receives fundings from the government to financially support it, although some donations have been made by the public as well.
Purpose
The purpose for this botanical garden is to conserve and to educate the people about the plants located in the garden in order to make people more aware of the plants in their surroundings. Besides for educational purposes the botanical garden also helps conserve the plants in the environment and protect them from extinction. The botanical garden has many facilities in order to fulfil its purpose too. They have many facilities to house many different species of the plants. The botanical garden has a stadium for their cacti that is specialised so that the water will not go to the cacti when it rains and will keep them warm even when the temperature outside is cold.
An ingenious solution to keeping the temperature right for the resident cacti
