January brings a
certain flurry of
portfolio-making
in the Graduate
School of Design. In
the small reprieve
between classes,
students take the
time to reflect,
compile, and
imagine themselves
in practice after May. This January, I noticed peers in my
graduating class were anxiously omitting a certain core
studio from the assortment. They weren’t sure it would
read well in the world of practice. The site was huge—a
military base—the brief had no single client, the context
was ambiguous—it was neither recognizably urban
nor rural nor suburban. In the anticipation of practice
readiness, much is discarded. Students are often unable
to articula є
