ARTISAN PROFILE Artisan Profile BY DOUG PERILLI TRONG TRAN immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in 1992. Upon arriving in the Boston area, he worked various jobs in the painting and cleaning industries. His brother- in-law, a long-term employee at Boston Centerless, suggested that Trong apply for a job at the company. The year was 1993. Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, the Toronto Blue Jays were World Series Champions, and Trong Tran began his long-distinguished career at Boston Centerless. TRONG TRAN Age: 53 Current Position: Manufacturing Technical Lead Years at Company: 26 The first position that Trong held was in the maintenance department. He would clean up the shop floor and maintain the swarf tanks on the centerless grinding machines. As he learned more about the business, he became interested in learning how to operate a centerless grinding machine. He went through BC’s rigorous training program and spent the next six years perfecting his grinding skills, providing our customers with the quality and precision they expected. Because of Trong’s dedication, meticulous work ethic, and willingness to share his knowledge with others, he was promoted to a Manufacturing Technical Lead (MTL) in 1999. According to his current manager, Jason Cialone, “Trong takes great pride in everything he does and has personally trained well over 100 employees on the shop floor. Over the company’s 60 plus years in business, Trong has become one of the top technical experts of all time. He is just as dedicated to the BC team as he was when he began over 25 years ago.” When asked what he likes most about Boston Centerless, he says the people: “The employees at Boston Centerless are the best. They are hard workers, team 14 players, very smart, friendly, and good to be around. I love my job. You are paid well for your hard work, and this is really my first and last job I will hold. I plan on retiring from Boston Centerless.” In his spare time, Trong loves tending to his garden. While I was interviewing him, he pulled out his phone and showed me some recent photos. Everything in his garden looked well-organized and thriving, and the smile on his face showed his passion—just like his work ethic at Boston Centerless. This is what makes Trong Tran a true artisan at Boston Centerless. Doug Perilli Doug Perilli is the Director of Marketing at Boston Centerless.
