Unless you live under a rock you’re aware of the phenom that is 50 Shades of Grey. There is much chatter about whether this is erotic genius or literary crap. No matter which side of the 50 Shades fence you fall on, you can’t deny that it has brought BDSM from the dungeon right out onto the front lawn of suburbia. People went the theatre in droves proven by the fact that 50 Shades made over 85,000,000 it’s opening weekend. While most BDSM purists denounce the book and literary prowess aside, something about E. L James’ subject matter has got people interested. So for the innocent, oblivious, clueless and curious, I’m going to give you a crash course into the basics of BDSM.

What the heck is BDSM anyway?

When most people think BDSM, the think pain. Apparently it isn’t just pain people! BDSM encompasses all CONSENSUAL acts that explore the sensations of power dynamics. BDSM stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism. BDSM can encompass many acts, some of which you may already use in your sexual repertoire. These can be acts like biting, spanking, or experimenting with different sensations like ice and hot wax. Or sometimes it can be using role-playing with dominant and submissive roles.
