Dear Bill Maher,

I am a black woman.

I am married to and amazing black man.

I have raised a black daughter and am in the process of raising a black son.

Your casual and flippant use of the N- word is an affront to me,

everything that I am

and everything that I stand for.

Perhaps it is plain ignorance that causes you to think that the realities of being a "house nigger" are the proper material for jokes.

Or, perhaps it's not ignorance at all, and it's just plain old don'tgiveafuckness.

Either way, as a descendant of slaves and someone who draws from their strength every day, I'd like to educate you.

Being "in the house" was not some easy, sham gig, as your comments suggested.

Being in the house, away from their mothers, who had likely been raped by those very people who owned the house, could not have been easy.

Carrying the food, dirty drawers and CHILDREN of said rapists could not have been easy.

And being in the room as discussions were had about which of your children would be sold off, could not have been easy.
