Why Ban Bossy?
Dear Beyonce, I have something to say. Michelle Obama, Madeleine Albright. You too Posh Spice. Listen up Girl Scouts and even you Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. I will not be banning the word BOSSY
from my vocabulary. Although most dictionaries define Bossy as "inclined to domineer and tending to give orders to others. I see no reason jump on the Ban Bossy bandwagon. In fact, I celebrate the term. If you are
unfamiliar with the Ban Bossy Campaign it is a television, radio, and magazine censorship advocacy campaign launched in 2014 with the mission of eliminating the use of the word "bossy" from the English language due to its perceived harmful effect on young women. The connotation of the word by its very derivative is to be A BOSS. We should encourage that in girls and young women.
Perception is everything
The concept of Bossy magazine, an Urban Professional Magazine for Women came out of necessity. The market has enough fashion, business and political mags to stretch to the moon and back, however Bossy is different. The concept was developed by myself and Editor in Chief
Shavon Brown-Robinson, two female entrepreneurs fed up with a lack of resources in our area. Living in or in close proximity to a major city doesn't mean there is always engagement or a willingness to pool information.
We hit several brick walls trying to figure out how to start our business, promote our business and ultimately grow our business.
Like a Boss
We both come from corporate backgrounds and had become keenly aware of the proverbial "Glass Ceiling". We'd tried the corporate route and found
it lacking. “Being Bossy” is what propelled us to the next level. To be fair, the connotation does not delight in the heart of all, but there are certainly worse things that a fiercely independent woman can be called. Being
Bossy is about being aggressive where necessary, taking calculated risks, rejecting the status quo and always seeking growth. When I was growing
up these are things my mother instilled in me at an early age so there is direct connection to how I conduct business today.
