Hey BOSSY! World! I hope you’ve enjoyed the inaugural issue of BOSSY! as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. As my team and I toiled away at putting out this issue, one word came up over and over again. Passion. Actually I’m lying, there were two words. There was also crazy. Crazy for doing this, crazy to believe in myself, crazy to think this would work. Somehow passion kept edging ahead in the race. Passion (and a little bit of crazy) gave me the nerve to think I could pull this off, but purpose guided me through all the late nights when I thought I couldn’t.
Now you can have passion for many things. For instance I have a passion for Anne Rice novels, Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter, 4 inch strappy heels and John Hughes movies. These are things that bring me great joy and make feel all squishy inside. Try not to judge me. However, none of these give me a reason to get up in the morning ( unless they are really cute heels) and none give me a reason to stay up all night grinding. So although it’s a very necessary ingredient, passion isn’t enough to get you where you need to be, you also need a purpose. I’m sure you’re waiting for me to tell you that it’s easy to find your purpose or “you’ll just know”. That’s a crock of you know what! Finding your purpose won't always be directly obvious. You have to put in the time to find it. So I’m sure you're saying now, okay get on with it, tell us the secret already since you know so much. I actually don’t know the secret I only know what works for me. These are the steps I took to find out where I really wanted to be in life:
Find something you love to do- Maybe you're not crazy about inventory spreadsheets at your day job, but what about after work? Do you draw or paint or write? Maybe you love to go dancing. Go crazy for baking cookies? Well are you doing it? Why the hell not? Find things that bring you joy and do them as much as you can. Duh!
Check your peripherals, not in your car, in your life. Who is standing next to you? Once you’re on this path, caution! There may be drastic changes ahead. When you change your focus, it changes everything. The way you move, speak, interact with people may change and everybody might not like it. Most people are uncomfortable with change. And that’s fine, your real friends will understand and adapt. They will respect and encourage your journey. And the ones that don’t, well they can’t come with you anyway.
