Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Works Upgrade
Well-Advanced
The R90m civil upgrade commenced in September 2013 and
is due to be completed by April 2016. The award of the R130m
mechanical and electrical contract followed in August 2014 and
the Wastewater Treatment Works is expected to be commissioned
in May 2016.
The purpose of the Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Works
augmentation from 25Mℓ/day to 50Mℓ/day is to cater for
the increase in sewage generation expected from the New
Cornubia Housing Development and Business Park. The
increase in capacity also forms part of the phased approach
to the future decommissioning of the Umhlanga Wastewater
Treatment Works, whereby it will be re-directed to the Phoenix
Wastewater Treatment Works.
The design includes a primary and secondary treatment,
as well as a new sludge thickening and digestion plant. The
extension also includes a new second-class water filtration
system, together with a new chlorine dosing installation.
Furthermore, the treatment process also incorporates nutrient
removal technologies, which reduce the high concentrations of
nitrates and phosphates, thereby allowing the treated effluent to
be discharged back into the natural environment in accordance
with the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation Special
Standards.
Bosch Stemele and the Design Branch of EWS worked
closely together throughout the design and construction
administration stages of the project.
