10 The First Bosch Projects Bagasse Diffuser 15m Wide Dedini - Bosch Chainless Bagasse Diffuser at the Meridiano factory in Brazil. The start of this year’s Brazilian cane milling season has brought with it the start-up of the first Bosch Projects Bagasse Diffuser at Usina Meridiano in Brazil. The factory was built and commissioned in 2011 and the diffuser ran for two seasons as a cane diffuser. Last year the owners, Noble Group, employed Bosch Engenharia to do a study and then implement the Bagasse Diffuser extraction system on their Meridiano factory. This involved installing a 100 inch Dedini mill and intercarriers preceding the diffuser. This has increased the capacity of the front end by 40% and also provided the process house with the option of using the high purity juice from the first mill to produce sugar and the low purity juice from the diffuser to produce ethanol. The other, less obvious benefit, is that the first mill adds approximately an additional 2 units to the cane Preparation Index (PI). This has far reaching consequences in Brazil as most of the preparation devices preceding diffusers are not operated to provide sufficient cane preparation for optimum sucrose extraction. The factory has since been plagued by numerous problems and unable to function as expected. Designed to produce 110,000 tonnes of sugar per annum, production was 33,237 tonnes in 2010 and 29,410 tonnes in 2011. This caused the government to look for a company to address problem areas in the factory. Looking no further, Bosch Projects was hired by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) to help ensure that the Skeldon Sugar operates at full capacity. Bosch Projects designed modifications to the factory’s three main aspects: the bagasse plow, the conveyor system and the condensate tank. They intend to rectify most of the factory’s design flaws in the outcrop period. The expected completion date is before the first crop in 2013.
