Upgrading of Mitchells Plain Town Centre and
construction of Link Road
This project was undertaken on behalf of the City of Cape
Town in phases and will be completed in 2017 at a construction
cost of R 57m.
The work consists of a wide range of activities, which includes
25 000m 2 segmented paved pedestrian alleys and squares in
the Town Centre, upgrading of four parking areas, construction
of 250m Link Road and 10th Avenue, with a turning area for
large trucks in Alpha Crescent. The project further includes
retaining walls, a boundary wall, street and area lighting, CCTV
network with pole mounted cameras, over 400 steel trader
canopies for informal traders, fish trader facilities, landscaping
including more than 200 trees, irrigation and a 24 month
horticultural maintenance period, street furniture and upgrading
of artwork, a guard house, as well as a 90m 2 mosaic art work at
the Mitchells Plain library.

Some challenges during this contract were the large number of
informal traders, as well as approximately 20 000 pedestrians
moving through the area on a daily basis, which had to be
accommodated and diverted around the works. The works in
the Town Centre therefore had to be executed in small sections
