Focus on team
In this new section of Checkup we get to know teams across our
organisation. And who better to start with, than our Telephony team.

Thompson, Michael Thomson.
Who’s on the end
of the line?
By Kerri Thompson.
The Telephony team is based at both Tauranga
and Whakatāne hospitals. We are but a small
cog in the great big wheel of the BOPDHB.
We are the first stop for all public calls for both hospitals and also
take internal calls putting you through to the right extension. We
also respond and activate your 777 calls. Each day we answer
more than 1000 calls.

With around 3200 staff, plus contractors and other health services
such as Support Net and Pathlab, you can appreciate that
fielding these calls through the main switchboard can at times be
challenging.
Recently we asked ourselves, how can we improve our service?
Firstly, we would like to thank all those Doctors, Nurses and
other staff who introduce themselves when calling, enabling us to
promptly route your call to your required destination, particularly
when time is of the essence.
To all those who do not introduce themselves, please do not be
offended if we ask you who you are. There are some days when
our crystal ball is a little cloudy.
It would be great if you could stipulate which site you require
when calling. For example do you want the Lab in Tauranga or
Whakatāne?
Our team always endeavours to provide a professional effective
service and we appreciate your time is precious.
Efficiency is our goal so please feel free to offer us any tips of your
own in helping us to help you.
Patricia McLarin and Jeanette Hunt from the Whakatāne Telephony team.
