Lest we forget
For the past 17 years Tauranga Hospital
ICU/CCU Registered Nurse Helen Tuck has
presented an ANZAC wreath at the Tauranga
Civic Service, Memorial Park, on behalf
of the hospital and Bay of Plenty
nurses. Up until a couple of years
ago she did this with colleague Val
Scott. When Val retired, she asked
another NZNO member to join her.
Kate Watts has joined her for the last
couple of years. From left, nurses Kate Watts and Helen Tuck.
Helen says they present the wreath to remember, not only the
ANZACs and all New Zealand men and women who served in
the wars, but also, the ANZAC nurses who served and lost their
lives. In World War 1 particular interest is the fact that a number of
New Zealand and Australian nurses lost their lives on the steamer,
the Marquette in 1915. The Marquette had 36 nurses from the
New Zealand Army Nursing Service (NZANS) on board and was
torpedoed by a German submarine in the Aegean sea. Some did
survive, many did not. In all, 550 nurses served overseas with the NZANS, while others
enlisted in the United Kingdom. The first large contingent of almost
40 nurses who returned to New Zealand on the Tainui at the end
of April 1919 were given a government welcome. But coming
home was hard. The nurses were treated very differently from
the returned soldiers. Even experienced sisters who had served
overseas did not always receive proper financial recognition after
the war. Read more about the NZANS at www.nzhistory.govt.nz/

The first International Midwives Day was held on 5 May 1991
using the theme “Towards safe birth for all by the year 2000”.
It was then agreed that the day become an annual event and
each year varieties of events are organised to promote the
midwifery profession throughout the world, by increasing the
awareness about the midwives contribution. Last year the theme
was “Midwives: Making a difference in the world”, this year it is
“Midwives leading the way with quality care”.
International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May and this year
the theme is, no matter the location. No matter the setting.
Healthcare should be accessible to all.
To commemorate International Hand Hygiene Day we
want you to celebrate your baking skills and creativity
with your best decorated cakes, cupcakes, muffins or
