Quit smoking referrals –
make a difference
Ian Wagstaff used to smoke more than 30 a day, until he was
admitted to Tauranga Hospital in October 2017. While he was
staying in the Surgical Assessment Unit he was given brief advice
and offered support to quit. He accepted a referral to the Hāpainga
quit smoking support service, which was filled out by Student
Nurse Lydia Bradbury, with the support of Registered Nurse Lea
Bayly, using the online referral form.
Immediately after leaving the hospital Ian reduced his smoking
to 25 cigarettes a day while wearing one of the patches he had
been prescribed. When the Hāpainga Stop Smoking Advisor met
with Ian she advised him to increase the number of 21mg nicotine
patches he was wearing until his cravings were managed. By
wearing 4 patches and using nicotine lozenges he finally managed
to become completely smokefree. One month later Ian was
discharged from the service, having been completely smokefree
for over 4 weeks and down to wearing 3 21mg patches and using
the lozenges occasionally.
Recently Ian went for an hour long bush walk, something that he
wasn’t able to do prior to quit smoking. He’s grateful to the hospital
staff for the initial NRT support and to Lydia and Lea for referring
him to Hāpainga. His wife says he is one changed man. Ian is
saving a lot of money, which he’s using to buy good quality food.
He has no cravings and now wishes he had quit sooner!
Ian Wagstaff gives the quit smoking service Hāpainga the ‘thumbs up’.
