Māori Health Runanga Year in Review
Results Based Accountability training
Sharon Shea from Shea Pita Consultants provided a Results Based Accountability (RBA) workshop to the
Runanga in June. The workshop focussed on ‘What is RBA?”, “How RBA is being used across New Zealand”, and
“How the Runanga can apply/use RBA to evidence success”. This training adds to the suite of tools and
frameworks that delegates can refer to in order to measure success and monitor performance in the area of
Māori Health.
Fluoridation
The Runanga has sought iwi endorsement to support the fluoridation of water, and has received information
on the full range of strategies including fluoridation to improve oral health for Māori. The Runanga want to
ensure iwi are in a good position to make an informed decision on the upcoming referendum. The key
message the Runanga wants to promote is that fluoridation is safe and effective, however it is not effective in
isolation; it also requires oral hygiene education.
Māori Health Runanga Profile Hui
A complete review and update of the Māori Health Runanga was recommended with a series of
workshops/presentation which took place with all Bay of Plenty iwi in late 2012.
Two successful iwi hui to profile the structure and the work of the Runanga were completed in 2012 at Hei
Marae Te Puke in the Western Bay of Plenty, and Te Manuka Tutahi Marae in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
The Runanga will continue its work to ensure Māori voices and concerns are heard and included in decision
making. My thanks to the Runanga and Board members, the Māori Health Planning and Funding Team, and
the DHB staff for your support during the year.
