8B THE BEACON May 17, 2017 The core four steps of senior health To start with, there is no magic pill, potion or cream that will rejuvenate us short of cosmetic surgery. Aging is inevi- table, like it or not, it is a fact. Because we already can see how aging already affects us, I won’t list all the external and inter- nal things that are attributed to aging. The best we can do now is slow down the aging process and start helping the body to repair itself. Yes, our body knows how to do that. Unfortunately, we still do many things to interfere with this correction and healing process. Imagine this, you have a minimum of 37 trillion live body cells constantly trying to duplicate themselves into healthy, viable young cells in an effort to rebuild and repair your body. Why isn’t it happening then? Consider your bad habits, medications treating symptoms, poor diets, carrying excess body fat, no intentional, continual exer- cise, not getting 7 to 8 hours sleep, and so on. It all comes down to discipline. We all know what we should be doing or where to get help to maintain healthful life rou- tines, stopping bad habits, and making a concerted effort to restore our body. But it appears these necessary changes inter- fere with the all the things we like to do.... and like to eat. So, if you do not know what to do to start assisting your body’s efforts to get well, here are what we call the Core Four. First, take a good (and I mean “good”) vitamin supplement. This will help supply what nutrients you are not get- ting from food, which unfortunately is considerable, regardless of how well you eat. There are a few, truly effective multi vitamin/supplements and many less effective ones. Second, take a high quality Omega-3 fish oil. Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids meaning the body cannot make them. We get way too much Omega-6 from food, which then acts as a pro-in- flammatory (inflammation-producing). Here are some of Omega-6 sources: some cooking oils (corn, safflower, flax, sun- flower oils), mayonnaise, bakery prod- ucts (cookies, cakes, pastries, muffins) would be a short list. On the other hand, Borage and Evening Primrose oils are also Omega-6 but are very beneficial. Third, drinking good water. For many reasons, we do not recommend munici- pal water, well or spring water and most bottled water. Reverse Osmosis purified water is an inexpensive source available at Buehler’s, Baker’s & Walmart dis- pensed from machines in the back of the store. Drink small amounts of this water, all day long. And finally, and probably the most im- portant is adding fiber to your daily diet. The American diet is seriously devoid of fiber and the proper dose of a good solu- ble/insoluble fiber product every day can literally change your life. We recommend fortified, Non-GMO flaxseed meal for more reasons than I have space for. The human body has an amazing ability to repair itself if its owner takes the time and discipline to do so.
