This issue

Memory does conspire with the culture to paint a picture of the

sixties that resemb les more myth than history. The images we recall of protest movements and hippies are often repeated and drive out of our consciousness the still very conservative and conformist tendencies that in both UK and US society carried over from the 1950s.

This issue and others to follow paint a more complex and nuanced picture of an era that was spiked with figures who stood up and found ways to break through a post war society that was largely, racist, sexist and was militaristic.
