Typical garden flowers will wow on your wedding day
What could be more beautiful than using flowers that are fresh, slightly
irregular but with natural colours and locally grown for your wedding.
With a huge variety to choose from, garden flowers are perfect to use
for bouquets, crowns and table flowers. Lindsey Hunter of Get Knotted
gives her advice for using garden flowers to wow on your wedding day.
Using typical garden flowers on your wedding day will give your
event/flower stylist lots to work with. There are UK/local growers of
garden flowers popping up all over the country as the demand for them
increases, which is really exciting to see and these growers need to be
supported.
Picking flowers from one of these growers is a special experience – it’s
like a treasure trove to wonder around. Go to see a few growers before
deciding on the flowers you want to use as they all grow different
varieties. It can be quite overwhelming walking around, so make up a
Pinterest board beforehand to ensure you have some idea of what you
are looking for. However, be flexible about what types of flowers you
use, the varieties from local growers will be seasonal and you may have
to adapt what you thought you wanted to using flowers which will look
even better on your special day.
Home-grown flowers and foliage have a natural beauty and shape. Embrace
the flow of their shapes and little imperfections that might occur in the odd
petal or leaf – nature at its best is perfect because it isn’t 100% perfect; each
bloom is a work of art in its own right.
We are seeing flower trends move away from the tight bell shapes towards
free flowing, wild and less rigid bouquets. Tendrils of honeysuckle, clematis
or ivy work wonderfully in bouquets, crowns and for table decorations. It’s
all about the different collections of textures and shapes that will really make
your flowers wow.
Home-grown flowers are perfect for making floral crowns. An interesting piece of ivy makes a wonderful
starting point to wire flowers to. If you’re giving your hand at making yours yourself, I lay everything out in
front of me and stop whenever I feel the need to try the crown on, checking everything is coming together as I
imagined. Roses of different shapes are particularly lovely to use, as well as herbs too as they give off
heavenly scents.
Some great garden flowers to use are roses, dahlias, honeysuckle, sweet peas, gladioli, and ranunculi to name
a few.
