Educational programmes for frail older people , their families , carers , and health-care professionals : A Systematic Review
Background : As the population ages , there is an increase in people living with frailty which increases demand on the NHS . Frailty is seen as measurable , complex , fluid and variable , impacting on quality of life . Healthcare policy emphasises holistic care with both a person-centred and multimorbid approach to meet the needs of people living with frailty , families , carers and health care professionals . This systematic review addresses whether the content and application of frailty educational programmes or initiatives to these groups will complement the facilitation of the Frailty : Core Capability Framework . Methods : Structured processes found published research . They were formally assessed for quality and reliability , then narratively synthesised . Results : There was heterogeneity of study design with variable quality according to the tools used with paucity of high-quality evidence ; ( 2 high quality , 3 low quality , 5 medium quality ). Four prominent thematic domains were demonstrated in the synthesis : health promotion , empowerment , self-care , online platform delivery . Discussion : Educational programmes and initiatives are vital for the prevention and management of frailty and must include a combination of the four thematic domains and be accessible to all target populations . Further work is needed to look at effective , accessible , sustainable delivery systems , including that of online digital platforms .
