Illegal Migration to Europe : The Case of Algerian Haraga
“ I will live a beautiful life in Europe ” is the last sentence that many Algerian families heard from the “ Haraga ” who , after many visa refusals , decided to go to Europe . Illegally , many Algerians seek to reach Europe several times annually by crossing the Mediterranean Sea . While they embrace the risk of being arrested by the Algerian authorities and sentenced for three years in prison , they are ready to die in the sea for the sake of making their dreams real . Italy , Spain and Greece are the socalled gates of “ promised paradise ”, Europe ! Once at the gates of Europe , they will head to their final destination which is France . These people who risk their lives to reach Europe are called the “ Haraga ” in Algeria . In the present poster , I will start by explain the meaning of the word haraga and its connotation . Then , I will highlight the economic reasons behind this type of migration , the role of social media ( YouTube , Instagram , and Facebook ) in encouraging it and the most recent haraga during the lockdown which is known as the covid-19 scandal in Algeria . Finally , I will outline the solutions that Algerian government has introduced to put an end to this phenomenon .
