Such as the vision of Hervé Dora, who won our ‘Best New Style’ award for his mind-blowing design of a mountain maple. Through his interest in drawing and comics he learned all about bonsai and he developed a very personal style where his approach is more a blend of the Chinese, European and the traditional Japanese styles. To express himself through bonsai he uses branches in a very expressive way, where they bend and curl in all kinds of direction. Another approach is the way Enrico Savini works. He works on all kinds of ingenious techniques meticulously so as to direct and prepare the tree over a period of years before giving it its final shape. Isao Omachi works in a more traditional Japanese way, making his father's vision become a reality. Working with virtually impossible material, which was standing in a corner for more than 30 years, he is solving problems, helped by techniques, to create a fantastic new tree. I think it is always interesting to see that there are so many different approaches to the art of bonsai – so many visions. With an open mind you can always learn from the way others approach their bonsai and appreciate their vision for its future. Marco Giannini sees bonsai in a more philosophical and spiritual way. In this issue he tells a very personal story of how he and his dear bonsai friend started work on a tree. Later his friend’s interest shifted away from bonsai, but the tree remained and was developed further. This tree has become a very precious memory for Marco.
