Thinking out of the box
I was invited to go to the big event in Arco,
where the EBA, UBI and ESA glued together
into one big bonsai event; held in a relaxed
atmosphere in the Casino of that charming
northern Italian mountain village. I had
to photograph all the bonsai before they
were displayed in the show. The Masters
with their bonsai stood in a long row
waiting outside for their turn.
Everything was ready set go,
only a small little detail,
the electricity plug
did not fit. This very
old building, had
ancient sockets,
perhaps; or I was
just in Italy where
there’s always a
surprise. Anyway,
I hadn't thought of
that, even though I
will take a collection of
adapters with me when
going to the US, Japan —
even the UK. All ended well. With
some searching we managed to find a plug
which fitted in the socket and then with
another plug, with another socket, it fitted
finally into my plug and I was connected
to electricity and could start the shooting.
Which went very smoothly, surprisingly,
because wasn’t I in Italy?
Another thing which went smoothly was
the demo with Mauro, in autumn last year.
It had seemed an impossible tree: big,
chunky with a crooked trunk, but it came
out fine with the artistry of Mauro, who
can think out of the box and just turns
things round to create something
thrilling.
Another example of out of
box thinking came from
Harry Harrington, who
added a shari where
you would not think
of adding one, at least
not on an elm. The
result is absolutely
stunning as you can
see for yourself further
in this issue.
Thor Holvila continues
his adventure in the ancient
pottery town of Tokoname. Here
he encounters a new spirit, a new fresh
movement among some new generation
potters. They want to break free and, yes,
they are thinking out of the box.
Enjoy the summer edition.
