Six in a row
After almost fourteen years of producing Bonsai Focus in its original size, we
decided at the start of this year to switch to a larger page format. We took
this big leap to give the magazine a totally fresh look. Now, six issues on, we
can truly say that we are extremely happy with the result and delighted by
your approval. The high quality paper and the larger size make it easy to leaf
through — it even folds open very easily. I am now looking forward to a new
year with articles once again featured
in the big format.
Speaking of big, we have finally managed to get Marco Invernizzi back on
our pages. He had the chance of working on the very big, old hinoki of Brussel
Martin of Tennessee, USA. It’s a special
tree because it has been under Brussel's
care for more than 30 years. He bought
it from a nursery way back in the ‘70s
to use mainly for root cuttings. It had
been growing in a pot for a very long
time until finally this year Marco was
able to work on the hinoki, known as
'Big Mama', to make it into a sparkling
bonsai.
Elsewhere in this issue, Louis Bourdeau continues his travels along off-track
bonsai gardens in the Fukushima region, of Japan, which shows the part
that bonsai play in the normal daily life of the Japanese. In the northern part
of Spain, known as Galicia, inspirational granite rocks can be found easily.
Giacomo Pappalardo discovered such a granite stone slab in a field near his
home, resulting in a forest planting with home grown pines. No granite for
Teunis Jan Klein since he lives in a flat part of Holland with no discernable
mountains. Instead he used a ceramic ‘rock’ to plant a fir in a very daring way.
Throughout the magazine you will also find lots of small digestible chunks of
practical information on wiring to help you along the way.
I must mention François Jeker who has so honourably taken over the Expert
Opinion series in his own very distinctive style. He will continue to do during
the coming year, so go on sending us pictures of your bonsai for his striking
design suggestions. Another interesting reader participation item is Garden
Visit, which gives us the opportunity of featuring our readers and their bonsai
gardens. We’ve been receiving stunning images of your gardens, but we want
more, so keep them coming. We are very curious to see what bonsai you have
and how you display them in your garden, on the terrace or balcony; we want
to share the best so that all our readers can enjoy them.
Enjoy the read
