BM: How do you experience working as a photographer on Bonaire?

KJ: It is quite hard for me. Thanks to Moda Superior, I finally got to do what I’ve always wanted to do. On Bonaire, I don’t get many opportunities like this, but there isn’t much to do about it I guess.

BM: Who is your favourite photographer?

KJ: Wow, this is a hard choice, but I would have to go with Emily Soto. I really love her style of photography. She does Fashion photography which I would also love to do later on in my career, she doesn’t just take a simple shot to sell the clothes, but she adds a story/theme to it.

Either it will look like a fairy-tale or it will have a mysterious vibe to it. She inspired me to do the kind of photography I am doing now.

BM: What can we expect from you in five years?

KJ: Wow, in 5 years, a lot can happen. To keep it simple, my major goal is to get my bachelor’s degree. Next to that, I hope to be working for a few magazines, shooting for some clothing brands and exhibit my own work.

BM: Where do you get your inspirations from?

KJ: I mostly get inspired late at night at the most random hours. I have this thing for textile; it just gives this nice effect when shooting outdoors with it. So I always have that in mind when I am planning on doing a photo-shoot. How I come to my ideas? I would simply browse through the photographers I adore, and well get the “art juice” start flowing inside me. Then, I would look for “elements” such as water, wind etc. that would give me a nice effect, for example using textile when it’s windy outside. That is how the process for fashion photography works, for me at least. I want to add an atmosphere to it. I also like to do Fine Art Photography, where I am free to express my work the way I feel or see things. To me, there are no rules when it comes to my fine art works. I like to illustrate contrasts in my fine art works, especially when I am doing surrealism. I want my viewers to question themselves on what they are looking at.
