Make a
difference
this
Each year on 18 July, the rest of the world will
join hands and take action to give back to our
society. Bonitas encourages all its members to
also take part and do your bit to honour the
Father of the Nation. Here are some ideas on
what you can do on the day.
Clean up your community
Littering is probably one of the biggest problems we
have within our communities. This is a perfect day to
round up community members and friends, and pick up
all the litter and rubbish polluting your area. This doesn’t
have to be a once-off thing; you can make it a habit.
Brighten up an elderly person's day
We all know a gogo or grandma who lives alone within
our community. On this day, why not spend a day with
them and help do their daily chores? This may include
helping to clean the house, cooking or working in the
garden, which will go a long way in uplifting them.
Donate clothes and shoes
There are a number of homes with underprivileged
families around the country. Why not get all your friends
together and donate all your clothes that are still in good
condition and make a difference in someone’s life? You
can also donate to a charity organisation near you.

Volunteer at an orphanage
Non-profit organisations like the Door of Hope, Children
of Fire, Dream Foundation etc are always looking for
volunteers to help with painting, moving, cleaning,
building and cooking. Look around your area and see
which one is close to you and lend a hand. The kids will
also appreciate to have someone to play with.
Donate books and educational toys
Underprivileged schools in townships and rural areas tend
to lack resources to support their learners. This includes
things like basic educational toys, eg. puzzles and blocks.
Donating books and educational toys will assist them in
creating a fun, educational environment.
Here are some other great ideas shared by the
Nelson Mandela Foundation
• Find your nearest fixed donor site and donate blood
• Help to build a home with Habitat for Humanity’s
International Mandela Day Build Week
• Donate educational materials to Breadline Africa
• Organise a fun outing for children in an HIV/Aids
programme
• Make “care kits”, including items such as a comb,
toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloth, etc., for
patients at a government hospital
