Short Story about the song from Deborah Henriksson: ”The Angel Gabriel” (sometimes
known as “Gabriel’s message”) is a traditional Christmas folk carol from the Basque region of
Spain and France. It was first collected in 1892 (but is surely much, much older!) and it was
then translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould. The piano version you hear on this track
was written by famed British choral director David Willcocks (think Christmas Service of Carols
and Lessons with the Boys’ and Men’s Choir at King’s College, Cambridge!) The original
recording can be found on my album “Simply Christmas” (Mandarin Records, 2009) – a
collection of carols and traditional Christmas songs from around the world using simple
arrangements – with Appalachian dulcimer, piano, and a cappella voice – all to enhance the
purest and most simple experience of the songs.
