ATHLETE OF
THE MONTH
Hi, my name is Sophia, and I am currently in seventh grade. I started
running two years ago. I run with my school, Park Tudor, during the
fall and spring, and at Carmel Distance Project during the summer
and winter.
Running is a great way to get outside and be active. Running helps
me relax, and it’s an amazing time to think. After all of the training I
have done, I am stronger in my core and my legs. When I am stron-
ger, it’s easier to run faster. Consistent training also helps with my
breathing. I can hold my breath longer, and I can go farther while
running. Long distance running is almost all mental. My dad tells me
lots of tips to improve my running, and also ways to throw off my
opponents. My experience allows me to push myself through the
race as hard as I can. Another great thing about running is that it is
a confidence booster. A lot of my success comes from the support I
receive from my family, teammates, and friends. They encourage me
to do the best I can do, and when I do not run as well as I thought I
would, they comfort me and encourage me more. I try to give them
the same support in their races, too. It is also a confidence boost-
er when I beat my personal records. Running is also a great way to
make lifelong friends. Even though I only see some of my running
friends infrequently, I am still great friends with them.
I hope to continue my streak of first place
finishes for the rest of the season, and
beyond. My goal is to win world champi-
onships and many other races. I believe
running is such an inspiring and helpful
sport.
