Question from a client:

I travel for work several days a week. Sometimes there's a gym at the hotel but usually not. How do I stay on my routine while away?

The best way to avoid frustration is to change your goals for a short time. I recommend focusing on maintaining during busy times, when you are away, and while adjusting to new circumstances. Here are 4 ways to stay consistent while you're away for business or pleasure!

1. Keep it simple and use exercises that don't require equipment. Most lower body exercises like squats, lunges, and bridges can be done anywhere and with no equipment. You'll have to skip some upper body exercises, so don't overdo it with the push-ups! https://youtu.be/n9gkViT8Dgo

2. Take equipment with you. A few resistance bands easily fit into a suitcase or travel bag and work pretty much the same as a pair of dumbbells. This gives you a full body workout wherever you are.

3. Find a local gym. This would be my ideal recommendation, but this is not always a practical or possible option. A few day passes at a nearby gym are worth it if you're serious about staying on your training plan. Plus, it is always fun to check out a new gym!

4. If your trip includes plenty of walking, sightseeing, climbing stairs and more, skip the training and enjoy yourself. Yes, I just said don't worry about working out! I often joke with clients traveling overseas that leaving the U.S. is an automatic 5 pound weight loss. All the walking and activity combined with less eating is enough of a break from the routine that you won't lose much ground fitness-wise.

Have fun, take some great pictures, and enjoy the trip!
