BARBARA BATES:
UNCONQUERED
Interview with Shawntrice Smith
Fashion designer Barbara Bates is a woman with personality, strength and style that have made her a fashion icon. When we met, she was just coming back from receiving an award from one of the local high schools -- one she did not expect, but was so deserving of. Dressed in her own chic way, we sat down to talk about the business of fashion and what’s next for Bates Designs.
How did you get started in fashion?
I got started by wearing my designs. People would tell me that they liked my outfit, and I would respond by saying “I made it”. Then they would ask “Can you make one for me?” I never learned how to sew; I always had resources of people who were good at their craft. I’m good at engaging people in conversations, picking fabrics and knowing what the fabrics can do.
You were recently honored by the Black Diversity Business Resource Group.
The award I received was for being a philanthropist. As I sit here with a stack of bills on my desk, it’s hard to think about someone who gives away money when at the end of the day, I come to work trying to figure out ways to stay relevant and keep the bills paid. It’s not easy sailing even though it’s been 30 years; I still struggle everyday to come up with new ideas to keep the doors open.
What lesson took you the longest too learn?
To surround myself with people who know more than I do. I tend to be a control freak. I want to be around people who can help me, but I want to tell them what to do. (Smile) I feel that this is my baby and I know how it works. So reaching out has been a hard one for me.
What advice do you have for women over 40 who are starting a business for the first time?
You have to eat right and exercise because those are the things that will give you energy and help clear your mind. Even though I don’t follow that rule the way that I should, if I do it for a week, I notice a difference. You have to eat right and exercise because those are the things that will give you energy and help clear your mind.
